Faye and Sam - The Wedding

Saturday was supposed to be a dreary rainy day - at least that is what the weathermen had been saying. It turned out to be a glorious day for a wedding! I was so excited when that sun started peeking out - I knew Faye and Sam deserved a beautiful day for their wedding day! I had such a good time, Faye and Sam both were incredible to work with and their families were super too. I don't like to get too mushy but I just have to say that watching Faye and Sam together was like watching a great love story. What a sweet couple!

Franklin, Tennessee is a great place to take pictures. Marianna and Andy had their first date at the Mellow Mushroom, so of course, we had to get some shots there. Andy proposed to Marianna at Sweet CeCe's so they reenacted the event for us. We had so much fun with them, cannot WAIT for their wedding in August!

Several months ago Meagan emailed me and asked about doing her maternity portraits. At the time it seemed a long way off, then, a couple of weeks ago she emailed and said she was at 32 weeks and ready for her portraits. I couldn't believe that time had flown so quickly. Baby Koch is due on April 1st, and I am looking forward to taking pictures of that sweet little girl once she makes her appearance. Jack the dog added some spice to the sitting as well so we had to get a couple of pictures with him in them too. Thanks Meagan and Adam for giving me the privilege of documenting this special time.

Diane Holland combines her annual Christmas party with a fundraiser for CHKD. She has a silent auction of which the proceeds go to the hospital and this year I set up a photo booth and took pictures with all profit also going to CHKD. It was a fun night and it helped out a great cause!

I have had a bit of a break, I was out of town for almost 2 weeks and then the weather pushed my sessions into later in the month. I had a great time with Faye and Sam on Saturday. We met at Oak Grove Lake Park in Chesapeake. The weather was beautiful and the trees still had much of their color. They were awesome to work with and I can't wait for the wedding next March!

A Different Kind of Bridal Session

What an incredible time I had on Sunday with Beth and Dave. Beth didn't want to have a bridal session done before her wedding last June, so we planned on doing what is known as a "Trash the Dress" session in the fall after the wedding. She is gorgeous and so easy to work with it really makes my job (if that is what you want to call it) easy. Dave came along and brought their 4 month old puppy, Leelu too. Leelu was awesome! A little afraid of the water but she is a real sweetheart. We decided this really wasn't a "Trash the Dress" - there was no paint or fire involved (haha) - so an after wedding session is a better term. Here is a very small sampling of what we did last weekend.

I had a great time last Saturday being Alissa's second shooter at Sophia and Jesse's wedding. Alissa is a photographer from Asheville, North Carolina who was hired to shoot her sister's best friend's wedding here in Virginia Beach. Her sister, Jaime is a friend of mine and when she told me that she would be helping Alissa I told her if she wanted me to, I would be glad to second shoot for Alissa so Jaime could have fun. I haven't second shot in several years, so I was really looking forward to going and just shooting and doing whatever Alissa needed me to do. It was a great Greek wedding, the bride was beautiful and the groom was handsome - what more could you ask for? I asked Alissa if I could post a couple of pictures and she agreed - I LOVE the one of the bride's son eating the strawberry!"

A Wedding at Silverbrook Farm

This past weekend I had the honor and privilege of documenting the wedding of Elizabeth Blair and David Kowalewski. Silverbrook Farm is a beautiful setting for a wedding. It is near Purcellville, Virginia about 30 minutes away from Washington DC. You would never guess the city is so close, because it is so peaceful out there. I drove up on Friday morning and the traffic was so bad I didn't quite make it to the rehearsal. I normally attend all rehearsals to get an idea of what is going to happen on the day of the wedding. I do not like surprises! I arrived out at the farm about 11:00 on Saturday morning and had a good look around the farm. I had been up there in March to shoot Dave and Beth's engagement photos but nothing was blooming and it was a misty rainy day. What a difference a few months and some sunshine makes! Dot Shetterly (the owner) had done an outstanding job bringing the farm to life with lots of flowers. It was beautiful. There was a threat of thunderstorms but they held off until after the ceremony. The ceremony was quite beautiful with Dave and Beth taking their vows overlooking the valley and mountains. The rain held off until the reception which was under a tent and the thunderstorms just skirted around us so we didn't have to worry about running from lightning. It actually was quite perfect, it rained just enough to give Dave and Beth a rainbow. It was quite faint - but it was a rainbow! Dave and Beth are a great couple. They were up for anything - including climbing into an old antique tub for pictures in the outdoor bathroom. Yep, that's what I said - the outdoor bathroom. Not to be confused with an outhouse - it was a quaint little area of the farm and has a working shower and tub. Dave and Beth - I hope you had a wonderful honeymoon!

Meredith and Derek's Wedding

On Saturday, I was there to witness and document the marriage of Meredith and Derek Price. It was a beautiful wedding. The ceremony was held at Freemason Baptist Church in Norfolk. We then headed over to the Ladies Shrine off Woodlake Drive in Chesapeake for the reception. The ceremony was sweet and one of the flower girls and one of the ring bearers cracked everyone up by picking up the rose petals on the way to their seats. The reception was decorated beautifully and the guests had lots of fun dancing and of course eating. The cake was beautiful and most importantly tasted quite yummy! Meredith and Derek, I hope you enjoy your "sneak peak".

I had a blast with this couple on Monday night. They were introduced to me by one of my previous brides, Ahisha Gore, who is now a wedding coordinator (signaturesofelegance.com). Ahisha came along on the shoot and we absolutely had a fantastic time. The weather was beautiful and Charles and Yemzie were awesome to work with. Their wedding is in August and it promises to be quite the event!

A Real American Hero

I don't think George would like the title of this post because it might embarass him but he is truly a hero to me and probably any one else who has met him. I went to Annapolis, Maryland this past Saturday for a very special portrait session. Back in March, a couple of weeks after my husband returned from being deployed on the USS George Washington, I got a letter from a girl who saw my website and found out about Oplove Reunited through my website. She was sad that she didn't know about it sooner to have pictures of her family taken before her husband left for Iraq. He had just returned from Iraq and she was asking if I would consider coming up there to do a session and if not, could I recommend someone. Brad and I had been to Annapolis a few years ago for a wedding at the Naval Academy and we loved it so I told her I would definitely think about it, Brad and I are usually up for a road trip. At that point she wrote to me and told me a little bit more about their family and George's time in Iraq. After hearing their family's story there was no way I wasn't going up there to meet this young family and do a session for them as a small token of my appreciation for their military service. And, yes, I said THEIR military service. George spent 15 months in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Infantry, but Carolyn spent 15 months at home with a baby keeping "the home fires burning". Carolyn's desire was to have some nice pictures of their 3-year old son with George in his dress uniform so Zach would know how special his dad is. Even without all the military background this family is super special. I had a great time with them and it was well worth the drive up there. I won't go into details here because I don't think that Carolyn and George would want me to, but just be assured the man is a hero and I really wish our children today were growing up with pictures of heroes like him plastered on their walls instead of pictures of sports and entertainment stars. Men like George are the ones who deserve to have their pictures on children's walls! (Click on the picture and you can see a larger version)

Hailey is the daughter of some good friends of ours and she is graduating this May. Hailey loves animals and when her mom asked if I could come out and take her senior pictures I asked if she would like to include Gypsy - her pony. Hailey thought that was a great idea! While we were out there we decided to go ahead and get pictures with the other critters too. Hailey was one of the kids who showed their animals at the 4-H Livestock Show and Sale a couple of weeks ago. She has a definite gift with animals. I watched her with her animals at the same time as I watched the other 4-Hers. I have to say she had the kindest hand with her animals and did a beautiful job with them. Her little sister Julia got into the act with Maizey, their dog.

Engagement in Yorktown

I drove up and met Brooke and Will at Yorktown Beach on Memorial Day to take their engagement pictures. They are getting married next June and their engagement party is in July. Brooke's mom was along too and was kind enough to lug my extra camera around for me. We had a great time taking all kinds of pictures and enjoying the live music coming from the patio of the Riverwalk Restaurant there on the boardwalk. The whole ambience down at the Yorktown Beach was really cool, a great place to go even if you aren't taking pictures :-)

My very good friend LeeAnn became a grandma for the first time three weeks ago. He is a beautiful baby and I had the privilege of taking pictures of him with his mommy and daddy as well as his Nonnie and great-grandma Nan. This family is very special to me and I loved spending the afternoon with them. Jack was an angel!

2009 Chesapeake 4-H Livestock Show and Sale

I had the pleasure of spending last Thursday and Friday at the Jubilee grounds with the 4-H Livestock Club. It was the 60th year for the Livestock Club. There was one gentleman who had been with the club from the beginning of the club. I have to admit I really didn't know what to expect. Lisa Kovacs who is the 4-H extension agent in Chespeake hired me to take pictures of this year's livestock show and sale. I had a great time and learned a lot. I am very impressed with the quality of the young people that show their animals. I could tell that a lot of work goes into the care and training of the animals. From the seniors all the way down to the youngest 4-Her, they all did a great job and I had a great time.

I had a great time last night with this wonderful pregnant lady and her 6 year old son. We are crossing our fingers that her husband makes it home before his baby girl arrives. It will be close! We just barely got the session done last night when the dark storm clouds started rolling in. Ryan is such a good little boy, he had just lost his first tooth and was quite proud to show that off. We did a few shots "in studio" with Mom and then we headed down to the playground so we could get some "action" shots with Ryan.

I had the distinct pleasure to take the first photographs of this little guy. He was so young he still had his umbilical cord. I had never done newborn portraits before but this little guy's daddy left on deployment about a week before he was born and when his mom asked me if I would take these pictures to send to his Daddy as a part of the Oplove program - how could I say "No"? Or would I want to? No! He was such a good little baby, his eyes were open for nearly the whole session which I was quite surprised since he is so young. I had the privilege of spending a couple of hours with this great family. Dad is about to deploy to Iraq and we needed to get some fun pictures of him with his family. The boys had a blast running in and out of the water and filling up their buckets with water and sand. They were loads of fun! Their little sister was a real sweetheart! My many thanks to this wonderful family for allowing me to spend some of their precious time with them.
